Wilderness Survival Schools in Washington

Hiking kid -
A few years ago, when we lived in Seattle, I became completely enthralled with edible wild plants. I borrowed a book from the library that was about ten inches thick. “Native American Ethnobotany” discussed not only the edible wild plants, but also their medicinal uses. I can walk past any garden and point out a hallucinogen, and a remedy for bee stings. I sort of failed in the edible plant department, though. We didn’t eat much nature then and we still don’t.
I think it’s an absolutely genius hobby, it combines hiking and eating (two of my favorite things) and it’s inexpensive. Next time we visit the island, I think I’ll taste something.
I was pleased-as-punch to discover the free online Nature Skills Center from the folks at the Wilderness Survival School in Duvall. Another local resource is EarthWalk Northwest.
